Current Legislative Issues in New York State

NY State Senate Bill 2023-S5399 

S 5399 requires the department of health to conduct a public information and outreach campaign on medically unnecessary treatments on intersex persons; creates an advisory council to include intersex persons, intersex-led organizations, and health care providers with demonstrated medical expertise treating intersex individuals.  This measure passed the Assembly and returned to the Senate on May 31, 2023.

 

NY State Senate Bill 2023-S6636

S 6636 also known as The Grieving Families Act legislation will increase the statute of limitations to three years (currently 2 years); increase who can sue beyond an immediate family member and would include financial damages and emotional expenses.  This measure passed the Assembly and most recently, the Senate on June 6, 2023.

 

NY State Senate Bill 2023-S5520

A5012/S5520 permits the performance of medical services by a physician assistant without the supervision of a physician as appropriate to the physician assistant’s scope of practice, education and training where such a physician assistant has practiced for more than three thousand six hundred hours.  This bill is currently in the Assembly Higher Education Committee & Senate Higher Education Committee.

 

NY State Assembly Bill A06019

A06019 Enacts provisions relating to collective negotiations by health care providers with certain health care plans in certain counties; applies to health benefit plans that provide benefits for medical or surgical expenses incurred as a result of a health condition, accident or sickness, including an individual, group, blanket or franchise insurance policy or insurance agreement offered by certain enumerated entities.  This bill is currently in the Assembly.
